ABOUT US

The Battle Green story so far.

Battle Green is a small business based in Eryri, North Wales, started by Dave and Lucy in 2018. We offer eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items, for the home and on-the-go, to help you reduce waste and single-use plastic in daily life.

We started Battle Green in response to growing and overwhelming reports on the negative impact that wasteful practices and plastic are having on the natural world, both close to home and further afield. There are now more micro plastics in the oceans than stars in the Milky Way, and around 100 million marine mammals die from plastic pollution each year. As huge animal and nature lovers, it's a deep appreciation for the natural world that drives us, and an awareness of how plastic waste is even starting to affect areas as unpopulated as ours - microplastics have been found in Llyn Glaslyn, a remote lake near the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon - Wales’ highest mountain).

"Battle Green" was the name of the first street that Lucy lived on as a child and we thought it was the perfect "call to action" to try to live more sustainably and push back against existing, more wasteful practices.

OUR PRODUCTS

At the heart of the range are our award-winning natural cosmetics and gifts. We make everything by hand in small batches with plant-based ingredients, here in North Wales. We are delighted to have won 15 awards for our cosmetics to date, including Gold at the Free From Skincare Awards 2023 (natural dry shampoo powder) and Gold at the Veggie Awards 2023 (Mandarin & Neroli natural deodorant). Most recently we won best ethical business at the Modern Maker Awards 2024.

Alongside these products, we offer a selection of sustainably made reusable items and zero waste kits for reducing single-use plastic in different areas of life, including the bathroom, the kitchen and while travelling.

We also take a zero waste approach to selecting ingredients, materials and packaging. Our cosmetics include upcycled ingredients such as coffee grounds, charcoal and raspberry seeds. Our reusable cutlery sets are made with upcycled wood (discarded from furniture making), and the lining for our reusable snack bags is made from recycled bottles. Battle Green cosmetics all come in plastic free, compostable or refillable packaging. Take our dry shampoo and tooth powder for example - you can reuse the original packaging or use your own container, simply top them up with our compostable refill sachets.

Excellent customer service and satisfaction is something that we strive for. We have amassed over 6000 product reviews (average 4.9 stars) and we are rated Excellent on Trustpilot

OUR PACKAGING

We keep packaging minimal, plastic free and easily recyclable. All orders are posted out in plastic free packaging and carbon neutral. We use a combination of recycled, upcycled or sustainably sourced cardboard boxes; shredded cardboard waste sourced from a local business for void fill; and paper tape with a plant-based, biodegradable and vegan-friendly adhesive.

Similarly, our product guides and thank you slips are printed on sustainably sourced paper with vegan-friendly inks.

OUR ETHICS
We firmly believe that businesses big or small can be a force for good, and that they are well placed to be a part of working towards solutions to social and environmental issues. Our handmade cosmetics are PETA certified vegan friendly  and cruelty-free; our fabric products are made with GOTS certified organic cotton; and we use sustainably-harvested wood.

Since we started Battle Green in 2018, we have been members of the Surfers Against Sewage business membership scheme to help support their vital work to clean up UK beaches and seas, through annual donations and our engagement in SAS campaigns. We plant a tree for every Battle Green box sold - you can view our virtual forest on Ecologi. We donate £1 for every reusable gift wrap sold each Christmas to Freshfields Animal Rescue - a local charity that’s very close to our hearts, where we volunteer each week. Finally, we partner with menstrual hygiene charity Flo Haven each year to donate reusable period pads to their pads drive - the pads go to girls living in period poverty in Nigeria.

We see the process of running Battle Green as an evolving project as we continue to learn and improve in our approach to sustainability. Thank you for supporting our small business!
